Belize’s windy early season

Out on our Belize island we offer two wind sports: windsurfing and kiteboarding. We are open during the “dry” season, which is late November through May. The rest of the year it is too rainy to be able to offer adventure sport packages with reliably good weather. We can windsurf and kitesurf through our season, but it’s the windiest at the beginning of the season, late November &

Caye Caulker: A Belize island visual tour

Caye Caulker has long been one of the premier destinations for travelers to Belize. This small island town is located about 15 miles north of Belize City and is close to the barrier reef. It is easily accessible by water taxi or with frequent domestic air service. Caye Caulker has retained much of the laid back, funky Caribbean flavor of days gone by, and the huge boom of tourism and development h

Tracking sea turtle hatchlings

We have an active sea turtle nesting area on Long Caye, where sea turtles (usually Loggerhead, but also Hawksbill) dig nests and lay their eggs each year on our beach. When we notice a new nest (they come ashore at night only) we stake it off to protect it and await the hatch, which typically takes 90 days of incubation. Because many turtles lay their eggs during our off season, many of the nests

Belize lionfish project

We have already posted several blog posts about the Lionfish invasion taking place all across the Caribbean, and what a serious threat it is to the existing coral reef ecosystems. Out where our island is located — at Glover’s Reef in Belize — we spear lionfish almost everyday, to try to help get a handle on this Caribbean crisis. Here is yet another great story we have come acros

How to buy snorkel gear

I talk about Belize on the phone much of each day, and one of the things many people ask questions about is snorkel gear. This is a subject I know, so I love to talk about it. We don’t provide snorkel gear on our Belize adventure packages, you have to bring your own. Sometimes people get quite bent out of shape about this, but all I can think is that they don’t realize that rental gear

Amazing surf video

Have you seen this video yet? It’s INCREDIBLE. Although we do have an excellent surf break on our Belize island, it is from Caribbean swell so the waves are generally only 4-6′. But we keep our eyes open for great surf shots. We just ran across this spectacular footage of surfing action shot at 1000 fps, which makes the slow motion footage amazingly sharp.

Driving to Belize

Every year someone from our company drives the 3000 miles down to Belize. This is the only way we can get all of our sport gear and other important items to Belize that we need on our island at Glover’s Reef. This is the third year that our Belize Adventure Week guide Neri Chi has done the drive for us. He is now a pro at it, and it’s not easy! You have 2 borders to deal with. We talke

A sea of refuse

In an earlier blog post we talked about the incredible amount of plastic trash that has been accumulating in the ocean gyres, or eddies, around the world. For the most part these huge floating islands of trash that collect in these gyres remain out of sight and out of mind in the central part of the oceans. However, much of this trash does sink, where it remains on the seabed, adversely affecting

The great Lionfish invasion

We have posted several times on the Lionfish problems we are experiencing out at Glover’s Reef. We spearfish for lionfish while snorkeling, we have tried serving fresh lionfish for breakfast, and we even teach eels to eat lionfish! This article recently ran in the NY Times describing the problems other areas are also having with the invasion of the Lionfish, which continues as an unfolding story
