Changing islands

The islands of Belize are ever changing. Composed of sand and coral rubble, not bedrock, and low lying, they are susceptible to extreme weather events, especially hurricanes. Over the years we have observed whole islands disappearing from big storms, and others appearing out of nowhere as huge wave events from storms batter the islands. Out at Glover’s Reef on our island Long Caye, Belize, we ar

Coral reef in crisis

In an earlier blog post we talked about how important Parrotfish are to the health of the coral reef. Another great article discussing the health of coral reefs in relationship to the Parrotfish has just come out in the NY Times. It outlines various studies of reefs in the Caribbean and elsewhere and how this is dependent on algae grazing fish, primarily Parrotfish populations, to keep algae overg

The best way to learn to kayak … in Belize!

Every week we teach a new group of guests how to kayak. We have been doing this a long time and we have a great system to get everyone on the water safely quite quickly. It’s a fantastic place to learn because the water is crystal clear and 82 degrees! Our guides are experts, the gear is professional grade, and in just a few hours you are ready to paddle out to a patch reef to go snorkeling

New development proposed for Lighthouse Reef, Belize

We follow Belize news closely, and we recently learned that there is a new mega resort being proposed on Northern Caye at Lighthouse Reef, where the famous Blue Hole is located. The new mega-resort is to be called the Puerto Azul Luxury Resort. Plans were unveiled at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in France, where the Italian developers showed off a model for a super high-end luxury resort the

Ode to Slickrock

I spend every March and April in Belize on our island. I’ve been doing this for almost 30 years now, and of course I love the island, and the snorkeling and kayaking and all of the other sports, but really, the best part is our guests. For some reason we have the BEST people join us, and they make me laugh, and that’s such a great thing. Last March Paul Jongerden and Brian Craig joined

Choking the oceans with plastic

As anyone who has been to our island in Belize knows, there is an obvious problem with plastic garbage that drifts and washes up on our beach, and indeed on all islands in the country. Left uncleaned, the shorelines of all coastal areas in Belize soon look like a landfill of plastic, several feet deep. It is truly astounding how much of this garbage drifts in. Although we constantly clean the shor

NEW gluten-free island menu

Our Belize island menu has long been vegetarian-friendly, but now it is also a gluten-free menu. Because we are so far from a store, and our cooks never, ever do the grocery shopping, we are unable to accommodate special diets. We simply offer a variety of choices that will work for a vegetarian who omits the meat, a gluten-free person who omits the gluten choices, and it still works for those of

The making of our Adventure Island video

Last week I announced the release of our new Belize island video. If you haven’t watched it yet, I hope you will. Much of the footage was filmed from a drone, operated by photographer Jason Lee, aka “Sky Pirate”. This was incredibly exciting for us to have this new-fangled contraption buzzing above our heads, and the guests on the island were incredibly patient and supportive whi

New Adventure Island video

Last week I wrote about the recent visit to our island by photographer Jason Lee. He was not only taking still photos of the island using his drone, he was also shooting a video. Suddenly our tiny, solar-powered Gilligan-style island was thrust into the 21st century by Jason and his drone. He hovered above us during sea kayaking orientation and while we were out in the surf. He provided us with a
